Has anyone been able to get basic UMA integrated instead of the DK version? I am not sure on how to approach this.

I'm using Standard Uma in my current project. I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "integrate". after you run the Uma bone builder your Uma is like pretty much any other rigged model.
I had to write my own scripts for character creation. ( used Secret Anorak tutorial as starting point ) and I'm still working on getting the Armor slots to work at runtime. But my character is running around the world fighting, swimming, climbing, and ziplining.
Once you have the dcs and avatar(and use Uma bone builder) in your scene, you can use your Uma for Invectors creator for the basic template then add the other components you want.
For instance, you can use the shooter/mele creator, then add the components for swimming and climbing and the like. I used the examples from the demo scenes for each and brought the vbot into my scene so I could copy the components to my Uma. Then delete the vbot from the scene.
I hope this helps. I'm pretty much a newb at this but will help if I can.
