I finally finished the system, which I have been working on for quite a while. It's well optimized and I'm glad to share it with you for free!

FEATURES: - Well optimized & easy to implement (drag one prefab onto the scene) - Works with moving objects - Calculates distance from player to waypoint in game units (equal to meters) - Scale effect when player is getting closer (customizable distance) - Turn Title/Distance/Icon ON/OFF individually for each waypoint - Use your own graphics (some free sprites included) - All visuals can be customized via uGUI - ..etc..
MAP FEATURES: - Almost everything can be customized - Fullscreen map with realtime camera view - Create, edit and remove waypoints in-game - Working colorswitch included - Trigger feature to automatically remove waypoint when entering zone - Customize input settings - Customize markers - Customize everything - Customize ... you got the point^^
HOW TO USE: - Simply drag the prefab "Waypoint Canvas" into your scene - Assign your character and your camera to the "vWaypointController" script - Add "vWaypointTarget" script to each gameobject you want to track - Add "vWaypointTrigger" script to a target, to destroy the waypoint automatically when within a certain range => Scripts can also be assigned at runtime / via prefab
works as advertised! can't wait for the in game switch on/off panel, will it be doable as a map page? (to set markers on a map)
Thanks! I'm not sure about the map thing, because it's quite impossible to find a good solution which works in all game environments. I may do both, a coordinate based system and a map system with orthographic camera floating above the scene.
