There is some cool tools to quickly create 3D characters for devs who don't know how to, or if you're on a hurry and need fast NPC's. Here are some I know:

Working with iClone quite a while. By far my favourite character creation tool. I'm using it in combination with the Kinect plugin which is amazing. No need for another tool for my motion capturing.

I picked up a kinect mocap for unity but i wasn't getting good results. I am using only a 360 model though, and hadn't setup the area properly. Hopefully I can get it running better in time for the shooter template so I can record some anim packs for everyone. Do you use a xb one kinect with iclone?

Well, I use a single Kinect Sensor v2 (the big one with depth sensing) in an almost empty room with 2 softboxes for lighting. Totally enough for my needs. If you need really amazing results, take a look at iPiSoft (link). Then you can go ham with multiple motion sensors ;-)

checking it out now, yeah I bought two 2nd hand 360 kinects for about $20, but haven't found the right software, trying out the ipi trial today Edit: Far more accurate than the unity app I was using!! Had trouble running two kinects until I realised it was actually an issue with the sdk and ai had to put the second one on a different pc. But wow the accuracy with the skeletom was miles ahead. Now I just need to set up a proper lit space to move around in! Mite vlear out the shed and dust off the green screen

Thank you for opening this up to discussion. I am a developer and I suck at 3d modelling. Truthfully I don't know if I'd suck at it cuz I haven't done any 3d modelling before lol . But bottom line is I am doing a lot to learn unity and I don't want to break that pace by trying to do modelling too. But I am getting to the point where I can't feel like I am making any progress without being a bit artistic too :'(

We have thought to start making our own animations for our game, is Kinect easy to use? Does it need any special software for Unity? And some sort of special suit to capture movement? Thank you so much.

Thank you so much. Be sure to check your usb for compatibility, there are only a couple usb 3.0 brands that actually work for this as far as my understanding. We bought the Kinect Mocap animator www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#/content/51090. Installing Kinect and the SDK and all is very simple and straightforward, the only issue we ran into was the usb compatibility so now we need to get a separate hub for it to recognize the Kinect. There is a lot of documentation on that for you to find, ours just turns on and off over again, lol!

hey folks - i would also highly recommend a few other options: Manuel Bastioni Lab for Blender. he worked for a while on the MakeHuman project but split off and went his own way. he's making a free character modelling plugin for Blender. right now it just does the model with skin - no hair or clothes, though he does have a proxy fitting system for these. www.manuelbastioni.comUnity Multipurpose Avatar (UMA2)this is under the Unity Asset Store. isn't perfect but it seems to improve monthly. system is open source though a few vendors make some high quality products: www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/35611 Morph3D charactersthis is actually from the Daz3D developer team. biggest strength is you get the versatility of Daz3D with morphs (aka Blendshapes) and good quality hair, but it's not free. it is relatively cheap however. here's the publisher page on the asset store: www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/search/page=1/sortby=popularity/query=publisher:13832 hope this helps someone out!
