jrackley Interesting that 3DForge exterior kit doesn't give you much performance. I have both exterior and interior kits but never used them properly since I am looking into game mechanics these days. What optimized assets would you recommend for a medieval game ? I've learned not to go with Manufactura K4's assets either. Performance killing in the best possible way, but lovely props.
Since you didn't ask me, i'll answer!
First thing, You want modular assets that have LOD's and texture atlasing. If they wrote their own shaders, even better. LOD helps with large scene's like terrain, where texture atlasing means less textures that you have to load. Not everything should be LOD'ed but it does help on most things. Texture atlasing is downright insane in how much it saves you preformance-wise. The problem with 3DForge stuff is that it's not texture atlas'ed at all. Thats why it is easy to replace the textures. So it's a trade off. The other problem 3dforge has, is that most of their lines do not line up (like brick wall to brick wall with door).
First thing i would heavily consider getting, especially if you plan on any amount of unique-ness is pro-core tools,
www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/search/page=1/sortby=popularity/query=publisher:1458 At the very least, get the free version. It allows you to build a primative level in minutes, but can also make complex objects, texture them and texture atlas the prefab. It should be included in unity by default.
The best Midevil asset has got to be
www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/32972 . This guy's stuff is easily AAA quality. It's absolutely stunning. High level of detail, LODS, texture atlasing, custom shaders that allow you to add things like snow or moss on top. Demolished / Ruins versions of most walls and structures. It's also pretty easily to customize his stuff so that it looks completely unique, and despite the texture atlasing, you can simply retexture much of the asset without it looking bad (the rocks alone are worth the price)
Now, I've worked with Max before, and he's extreamly optimized. Most everything in his modular kits line up like a glove, and are usually decent resolutions. My only problem is he sucks at highly detailed stuff and everything looks generic. This is great for peasant houses, or stuff you don't focus on, but you need some stuff that really stands out to complement it.
