Hi I'm new to invector. I recently changed the roll animation to a dash back animation and it seems to work fine if I'm moving. However I would like to be able to backstep from idle as well as use forward and side to side dashes based on which way the character is moving. I have a little experience coding if that's the route I need to take.

I would also love any tips on setting this up. I've gotten about as far as yourself but have the same issues with being in idle. Additionally, I'd like to be able to get my dash working while jumping because at the moment (much like a roll) it can't be triggered while in the jumping state. The good news is that the dash animation I made does move towards a locked on target as expected.
I'll post here if I make any progress as I fiddle around.

Sounds like you want to replace strafing and move forward backwards animations. I'm not sure how strafing is setup in Invector but there's the concept of moveset in Invector. A moveset is a bunch of animations tied to a moveset ID. For example when you don't have any weapons your move forward backward left tight strafe left right animations are for moveset Id 0. If you have a sword, each of these animations change and they belong to a moveset ID 1. Similarly I think you need a new set of animations put into a different moveset ID for dashing in directions. You might need to throughly understand how the animator is setup, because it'll help a lot in the future.
I may be wrong though because movesets were generally associated with weapons. But you can explore that code and see what you can come up with.
There were also some tutorials from shadex and uberwiggett about how to add new animations to the controller that may even explain to a certain extent on how to achieve the requirement you have.
