Hi All, It's with great pleasure that I make this post and say that the best Vegetation rendering solution for Unity out there is now released on the asset store. The name's Vegetation Studio and I've been part of the beta group. The tool takes the performance of your vegetation to the next level. I went from 90 FPS in editor to a staggering 400 FPS in a large 5km x 5km terrain completely filled with Vegetation. It also has a lot of rule based terrain tools to populate vegetation. Also supports touch bend grass, runtime masking of vegetation and a very strict integration with tools such as Sentieri used for creating roads and the Microsplat shader environment. Also note that it works great with terrain tools such as Gaia. Not to mention it works great with VR. This description doesn't do it justice and I would let you guys figure this out on your own by going to the forum thread below. The tool is on sale at 75$ before going to 95$ in the next couple of days. I assure you, it's money well spent. Give it a shot. www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/103389 forum.unity.com/threads/released-vegetation-studio.479244/Regards, tharindu

When you mention that it works great with Gaia do you mean that it has an integration or, on the contrary, do you have to do the map with Gaia and apply the grass with this asset? Because we use Gaia, but we are not very happy with the purchase.

I'm pretty sure there is work on an integration, but I haven't experimented with integration of the two yet, I can say, I would make the terrain with gaia and leave out all the placement of objects/vegetation and just use Vege Studio for it. I've played through the demo and the whole terrain had trees and lots of grass and I was hitting 190+ fps average. It's very good and some of the functions on it are amazing for world creation. I'll let tharindu speak as to confirm the integration angle for gaia as I can't find any info to confirm on hand :P

Because we use Gaia, but we are not very happy with the purchase. There's an integration coming up as far as I am aware on letting Gaia use the vegetation studio spawners instead of the Gaia spawners. Something similar for Gena as well. But what I really meant to say was that it doesn't cause a problem with terrain tools. You're not happy with the VS purchase or the Gaia purchase ? What issues are you currently facing with VS ?

Gaia, we bought it months ago and it never quite convinced us, it may be that with Vegetation Studio the thing changes. The truth is that it seems a fantastic asset and the extra FPS is something to be thankful for.

Dunno when the developer intends to release multi tile and not to mention I believe Gaia 2 was abandoned half way through. While it is certainly a good tool and it filled a certain gap back in the day, with new tools coming up with raw gpu compute power I am not sure how long Gaia will stay relevant. While I am unhappy to say this, I too am looking at other tools like World Creator standalone for Unity and also Terrain Composer 2 with Seneral's Node Painter Addon. Not to mention, this is personally my opinion and belief.

I have tc2, it's quite good for multi terrain stuff, still have no idea how to use it properly but with Vege studio now I don't have to worry so much, I can make/texture the terrain and then use VS to fill it with junk.

Mate if you could make a tutorial on anything, that's the biggest tutorial you could make :D TC2 is quite difficult for a newbie to grasp and that's why I even edged away from it in favor of Gaia. But right now, I am willing to try other tools.

I bought both one after the other during sales. Gaia is great for quicker smaller demo scenes but trying to change parts on it was wayyyy harder for me. Tc2 has a bunch of neat features that I don't know how to use but when it comes to making terrains with fancy shapes I am king! I can do a quick letsplay tute on how to get it together :P

Gaia 2 hasn't been abandoned. Adam learned some new things while working on CTS and also came up with a better approach than what he had been doing in Gaia 2, so he decided to end the current Alpha testing group and do some major reworking on the foundation of Gaia 2. Gaia 1.x does have unofficial multi-tile support. There are posts describing how to enable it on the Gaia thread on the Unity forums. I don't know to what extent is supports multi-tile, as I've never needed it, but I know there is some level of support. I'll agree that the other terrain tools will eclipse Gaia fairly quickly if he doesn't get a new version out relatively soon. However, even if Gaia 2 is late to the party, I suspect it will be much superior in terms of usability.

Let's continue the gaia talk when Gaia would one day actually support the features officially ;) the experience was from the past when I was in the beta group, abandoned it and moved on to the new group before I left it altogether. I've worked very closely with Adam before but had a parting of ways somewhere down the line.

Yeah, there were a number of parting of ways not too long before he decided to close the alpha group. Not entirely sure what happened to prompt that. Oh well.

The alpha group was shutdown purely because of the toxicity in there. Certain people were absolutely in a hurry and I also disagreed with that. Most people tend to think developers are at their whim and should bend the knee after having paid 50 bucks for an asset hehe. I left the new group that Adam created after the alpha group with only a select few of us to go forward with his new vision on a different product. He didn't like the fact that I was encouraging other terrain tools to compete in the asset store market while being part of those beta groups. As long as there's no disclosure to either party on information in other tools, while being part of a beta group I don't see what's wrong. Unfortunately that lead to us falling out. In either case it's not why I no longer use gaia. Right now gaia is just too slow for me and not practical for larger terrains. I have to wait at least a few minutes to run a session on texture spawners and object spawners and the same amount of time to test with changes which other tools like world creator or tc2 does in mere milliseconds. Time is money if it's not a hobby, so I can't rely on loyalty alone to make a game. I need what's required at the right time. Right now, gaia isn't my tool therefore. but Adam's a developer with a vision. He will come up with something cool sometime later, which if it was as good as gaia 1.5 was, I would buy in a heart beat.

tharindu Do you know if VS will have a lite version or a demo of sorts anytime soon? Would be cool trying it out before buying. Cheers! Xalo
