I just answered your email, but here it go:
You can create simple public methods that change the CompanionState and call using Events, it's pretty simple... something like that:
public void ChangeToFollowState() { companionState = CompanionState.Follow; }
public void ChangeToStayState() { companionState = CompanionState.Stay; }
