I use my own inventory and it suits me. However, it works in a completely different way. Items do not check if they are equipped, this is done elsewhere. Lets say, I press a button, and what should I call to equip a weapon? How to check ammo, state, and so on? ... I'm confused.

When you instantiate a weapon inside the character's hand it will automatically assign as a weapon (melee or shooter), that's pretty much it.
To check ammo just check your currentWeapon.ammo, take a look at the ShooterManager methods
