using the simple AI enemy controller from the Shooter and Melee packages, the enemies wee working fine on a flat plane, but on a terrain nav mesh they just start runnning around- even though the current state says idle
any reason for this?

Check your navmesh agent he could be trying to reach somewhere that the capsule collider can get to
