I've been looking at Invector's Swimming add on and have been tinker with the water rings when you enter the water.
I've now integrated it into this "asset" by Minion 's Art.
Basically added an ortho camera to the character and pointed down to record the ring particles into a render texture. I have a custom shader graph that pastes the render texture onto the surface wherever the particles are. That way, you can add waves or rough currents to your water and the ripples will stay in sync with the surface.
To make sure the effect doesn't look repetitive, I added a random start rotation to the particle emitter.
