absolute nub question but here goes: I want my player character to have a 'waking up' state that happens every time the player spawns. Nothing fancy, I just need it to play an animation and restrict all movement until the it's complete. How should I go about implementing this with Invector? any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks )

Absolutely can do.
Can do easily. On your spawn location create a generic action trigger with auto action and destroy it after the action is complete. so as soon as the player spawns, as auto action is enabled your animation will play automatically. you can disable the input until the action is complete.
Watch this tutorial for more information on how to set these up . This is a really powerful feature and I use this all the time :D even in my RPG pack.

You can also simple add your animation and set to be the default in the animator, with a transition to locomotion.
